A good way to discover the Broads without any knowledge or boating expertise is to take one of the ferry tours, with commentary, operating from just outside of the Peninsula Marina, within walking distance of the cottage.  These run usually in the afternoons and evenings and some stop in the picturesque village of Horning.  This is an excellent way of learning about places you may later want to visit in a hired day  boat. Some of the evening excursions have live jazz or other music.

Of course the most fun is had from “messing about on the river” with family and friends.  There is a large variety of craft for hire, with day boats seating 6 or more passengers, or picnic boats where you can make hot snacks etc.  These can be booked by the hour, half-day, day or even the whole week. Wroxham Boat Hire (directly across the water) offers Wherry Cottage a 10% discount for 4 hours or more.

Why not book a boat for the time of your stay and keep it on your mooring right outside the cottage!  Also canoes kayaks and rowing boats can be hired and open fishing boats are available and can be kept outside the cottage

The Norfolk Broads is made up of 120 miles of navigable waterways; a mixture of rivers and wide open Broads (similar to lakes).  There are no locks to navigate and many of the Broads are fairly shallow enabling boats to drop mud weight and moor away from the banks in wide open spaces to enjoy fishing, eating a meal, or just the peace and quiet of nature (perhaps with a pair of binoculars).  Wherry cottage enjoys it’s own 45ft private mooring right outside the private terrace.
